The cable cast on creates an edge as sturdy as they come. Let’s begin as we always do, by making a slip knot.

Take one of your knitting needles in your left hand and slide the loop onto the needle, pull on the tail end to adjust it.

Take your other needle in your right hand and pass the tip of it through the slip knot, so the right needle is sat below the left needle.

Take the yarn in your right hand and wrap it clockwise around the right needle (with the tip facing away from you).

Gently bring the right needle back towards you scooping up a new loop in the process.

Turn the needles so they are parallel to each other whilst pulling out that new loop.

You’re now going to take the tip of the left needle and pop it through that new loop, once it’s over the end you can slide out the right needle. You have just cast on 1 stitch.

Take the right needle and pop it between the two loops. The right needle is sat directly below the left needle.

Take your yarn and wrap it around the right needle as before, scoop up a new loop by pulling the right needle back towards you and turn the needles parallel to each other to pull up the new loop. Then transfer the loop to the left needle. You have now cast on another stitch.

You’re doing it! Now just repeat steps 8 and 9 until you have cast on the right number of stitches.
