How to work in two colour brioche stitch
This how-to will show you how to work a two-colour brioche stitch, which is a chunky rib stitch with an amazing texture. When you are working in two colours, each side of the knit will vary slightly, with one colour being more defined on one side, and the other colour on the reverse side. In this video we will be using our Sheepaca Yarn in Pink Lemonade and Lipstick Red, as well as 3.5mm circular knitting needles. Let's get started!
To work in two-colour brioche, we have chosen to cast-on an even number of stitches in one colour, and have joined it in the round. To work this pattern, we will need to work a set-up row. This should be done in the same colour yarn that you cast-on with. Begin by knitting your first stitch.
Next, bring the yarn through to the front of the work, in between the two needles.
Slip the next stitch purl-wise
Insert your right needle into the next stitch as if to knit it. Bring the yarn around to the back of the right needle and into the middle, and knit the stitch. Here you have formed a yarn-over whilst also knitting a stitch.
Repeat steps 3-5 for the rest of the round to finish the set-up row of your two-colour brioche stitch.
Pattern Round 1: Begin by taking your contrast yarn and lying it so that the end is at the back, and the working end is lying at the front of the work.
Slip the first stitch purl-wise
Take your contrast yarn and wrap it around the back of the right needle and into the middle, so that the yarn is at the front of the work. This creates a yarn-over
Purl the next stitch and its accompanying yarn over together.
Repeat steps 8-10 until the end of Pattern Round 1.
Now it's time to work Pattern Round 2. Here you will go back to using the yarn that you used to cast-on and do your set-up round. Knit the first stitch and its accompanying yarn-over together.
Make a yarn over, and slip the next stitch purl-wise.
Keep repeating steps 12-13 to complete Pattern Round 2.
After working Pattern Row 2, you will be able to see that your pattern is starting to take shape. To continue working in two-colour brioche, repeat the Pattern Rounds 1 and 2 until your piece reaches the desired length!
