1.

Once you have worked your final decrease round of the toe, it is time to reposition your stitches so they are ready to be joined. Transfer the stitches from needle two to needle one, and the stitches of needle three to needle four. Your toe should lie flat.

2.

Cut your yarn leaving a 30cm/12” tail. Thread your tapestry needle with this tail.

3.

Think of your dpns as one and two. To set up the Kitchener stitch join, take your needle purl-wise through the first stitch on needle one, then take it through knit-wise the first stitch on needle two.

4.

Now repeat the following sequence: Take your needle knit-wise through the first stitch on needle one, and slip that stitch off. Then take your needle purl-wise through the next stitch on needle one, don’t slip it off. Take your needle purl-wise through the first stitch on needle two, and slip that stitch off. Then take your needle kniy-wise through the next stitch on needle one, don’t slip it off. The way I remember it is by thinking: knit, slip, purl. Purl, slip, knit.

5.

Let’s see that again. As you join your two sets of live stitches, be careful not to pull on your yarn too tightly. You want it to mimic the tension of the stitches in the rest of your sock.

6.

Repeat the steps until you have just one stitch left on each needle. Insert your needle knit-wise through the stitch on needle one, and slip it off. Insert your needle purl-wise through the stitch on needle two, slip it off. Secure your yarn tail to the inside of your sock.

This is how you do it
