Making a swatch allows you to check that your tension matches the pattern, it is also a good way to practice a new stitch. If your tension is different, your finished piece will be a different size.

Check your pattern for the correct tension.

Work in the stated stitch pattern making a swatch that has twice as many stitches and rows as the tension per 10cm/4".

Each little horizontal bar is 2 rows. Work from the bottom up to ount the number of rows.

Let's see it first for single crochet.

6.

Now in double crochet. Work from side to side to count the stitches. Each bar is a stitch.
