Work across your piece up to the point where you want to work your chain space.

Make 1 chain stitch by wrapping the yarn around your hook and pulling it through the loop on your hook.

Skip 1 stitch along your row.

Work a crochet stitch into the following stitch after the skipped stitch.

Work in crochet to the end of the row.

One the next row, work in crochet up to the chain space.

Insert your hook into the space. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the space, then complete the stitch as normal.

Work in crochet to the end of the row.
