To work the fan stitch, you will need to work in a multiple of 6 stitches plus 3 extra stitches.

Chain 4, this counts as your turning chain.

To begin the setup row, skip the first 4 stitches of the row and work into the 9th chain stitch from your hook. Work 2 double crochet stitches into this stitch.

Chain 2 stitches.

Work 2 double crochet stitches into that same stitch.

These 4 stitches make up a fan: 2 double crochet, 2 chain stitches, 2 double crochet all into the same stitch.

Make 1 chain stitch.

Skip the next 5 stitches and make another fan.

Continue making fans, chaining 1 in between and skipping 5 stitches until you have 4 stitches left.

To finish your setup row, chain 1 stitch then skip the next 3 stitches and work 1 double crochet into the final stitch.

Now that the setup row is complete, we can start pattern row 2.

First row: make 5 chain stitches, work 1 single crochet into the first chain space.

Make 2 chain stitches and work your next fan into the next chain space (which is in the space in the middle of the fan on the previous row).

Make 2 chain stitches and 1 single crochet stitch into the next chain space (which is the space between the 2 fans on the previous row).

Repeat this pattern to the end of row: 2 chain stitches and a fan into the next chain space, 2 chain stitches, single crochet into the next chain space.

To finish the row, work another 2 chain stitches and double crochet stitch into the same stitch as your final single crochet.

Second row: start with 4 chain stitches.

Stitches to be repeated: skip the first 2 chain spaces and work a fan into the next chain space (which is the chain space in the middle of the fan on the previous row).

Work another chain stitch and repeat those stitches again.

Repeat until you have 2 chain spaces left of your row.

Work 1 double crochet into the last chain space.

Repeat these 2 rows until you have reached your desired size.
