How to Customise your Unchained Sweater

We love us some good cables, so the Unchained Sweater is not-so-secretly one of our faves. Alice, our Junior Designer (@alicehoyle) recently knitted and customised the sweater adding a turtleneck. We posted it on Instagram and lots of you guys have asked us how she did it so heeeere you go:

This oversized knit has a boxy fit which makes it an easy one to throw on. Knit in Wool Me Tender, the Unchained Sweater is also super soft and cosy, keeping those chills at bay. If you’d like to give this pattern a little extra love, Alice has revamped the neckline with a cosy roll neck.

THE TOOL KIT

6 x Wool Me Tender
1 x Unchained Sweater Pattern
1 x Rosewood Knitting Needles (Size: 6.5mm/US10.5)
1 x Cable Needle (Size: 6.5mm)

HOW TO ADD A ROLL NECK

While the original Unchained Sweater Kit calls for 6 balls of Wool Me Tender, if you are making size 2 or 3 you’ll need one extra ball to knit this new neckline. Other than that, creating this custom sweater is business as usual until you get to the assembly and finishing steps.

Simply follow the original Unchained Sweater until Instruction 3.

Now, instead of knitting 5 rows in stocking stitch on the neck, knit 1×1 rib stitch until your neck reaches the height you want. If you’d like a bigger roll like Alice’s, work 1×1 rib stitch for 22 cm. Use a circular needle if you want to avoid a seam, however – this is optional as you can seam it as the original pattern explains.

NOW, PUT IT ALL TOGETHER

Follow the rest of the assembly and finishing instructions in the original pattern until you come to seam the neck. When you get to this step, have the right side of the fabric facing you while you use the vertical invisible seam halfway up the neck. Then turn it inside out and continue seaming with the wrong side of the fabric facing you.

And there you have it – now you’ve got a custom Unchained Sweater! If you try out this new take on the knit, tell us how it went in the comments!

  2. I love this sweater! So cozy! Quick question though, if I wanted to size this up, how would I do so?
