Meet the Maker: Emily Sear

Meet Emily, one of our very first Gang Makers and the right-hand of our new crochet collection. We hooked up with her at home to talk life, the universe and everything.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST PICK UP YOUR KNIT STIX?

My grandma taught me how to knit when I was about six or seven. We made clothes for my dolls. (She made clothes, I made tiny squares and pretended they were clothes.)

WHERE’S YOUR HAPPY PLACE TO KNIT?

I love to knit in bed with a good Netflix show by my side but with all this nice weather, you can’t beat a good knitting session in the park – London Fields is my local.

WHAT’S YOUR PROUDEST KNIT MOMENT?

Knitting the Christmas jumpers with WATG as part of the Save the Children campaign was a great experience but getting to help design and create a huge chunk of Wool and the Gang’s new Crochet Collection is definitely at the top of my ‘stuff I will brag about’ list.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE FROM THE CROCHET COLLECTION?

The Carrie on Tote is definitely my favourite. It’s nice and roomy but the mixtape means it’s super light and easy to carry around. The leather straps make it extra special.

WHAT’S YOUR KNITSPIRATION?

Film-based knitwear is always a great source of inspiration. Ryan Gosling’s character in Lars and the Real Girl has an extensive knitwear collection.

WHICH WOOL AND THE GANG PROJECT HAVE YOU ENJOYED THE MOST?

I love making bags – both beautiful and useful! The Hold Tight Clutch is especially rewarding.

WHO WOULD YOU INVITE TO YOUR WATG KNIT PARTY?

I would create a gang of super tough(ish) guy knitters – Benicio del Toro, Javier Bardem, Robert De Niro, Joaquin Phoenix and then Woody Allen to lighten to mood a little.

WHAT’S NEXT ON THE NEEDLES?

Cotton-based projects! I’m also itching to make the new Jackson Backpack – so lovely!

WHAT’S YOUR PURL OF WISDOM?

Don’t give up! Even if your first project is a bit wonky, wear it with pride!

Last question…#shareyourknits or keep your knits?

  1. How do you become a maker, if even possible? I’ve been crocheting my whole life and would love to make a little extra dough while doing something I love! Thanks!

  2. I love your work!! Now I know the beauty behind it! Thanks for sharing your talent with those of us who LOVE WATG!

  3. I have just one comment I am looking for beginner oversized knitting patterns for sweaters. When I watch your videos they are not always saying what size they are. But I love watching and learning. But because I am a beginner I don’t quite understand the sizing, to make it a larger pattern for a curvier person. 👍 Thank you for all the great looking ideas.
